Telescopic

Today we’re going to be talking about mascara, or more specifically, my all time favourite mascara. Guess what! It’s from the drugstore and won’t cost you your first born! I think that mascara is definitely something you should not be spending gobs of money on, particularly because it’s only good for about six months.

L’Oreal Telescopic Carbon Black mascara can be purchased at any drugstore carrying L’Oreal products so it’s easy to find.

I love this mascara for several reasons. It is black as can be. It does not smudge. I find that a lot of non-waterproof mascaras tend to end up all over my face by the end of the day, but not this one. The tiny rubber brush makes it easy to grab each lash and makes for lots of length and definition. It’s also great for bottom lashes. One or two coats is more than enough to give you a fluttery lash look without going over the top. You can always add an extra coat in the evening for a more dramatic look. L’Oreal Telescopic is also never clumpy.

The slim brush means you won’t poke yourself in the eye, which is always a mascara hazard! Lastly, I don’t find this mascara difficult to remove at the end of the day. I just use my trusty Garnier micellar water and a cotton pad and the mascara comes off easily enough.

So tell me, what’s your favourite mascara of all time?

10 Days of Favourites #10: All about lashes

If I’m dashing out the door and only have a minute or so, the products I always take time to slap on are blush, lip balm, and mascara. I love mascara. I don’t have long or thick lashes so I love the extra oomph a couple swipes of mascara provides. I am lucky enough to have curly lashes (curly hair = curly lashes) so at least I don’t have to use a curler. Easy peasy.

Right now there are three mascaras I reach for regularly. Benefit’s They’re Real!, Maybelline Great Lash, and Covergirl Clump Crusher. I’ve talked about They’re Real! before (something about pillowy cheeks and yada yada yada), but it’s worth saying again that this is a fantastic, buildable product that will give you lashes out to here.

Maybelline Great Lash Mascara is a complete classic. It’s a great product at a total bargain price point. I like the teeny brush for itty bitty bottom lashes. This is the one I always recommend to anyone who asks about a good drugstore mascara.

Covergirl Clump Crusher is my newest mascara and it’s great for everyday. It gives good definition and really doesn’t leave any clumps behind. I like the applicator a lot. It’s kind of rounded and I find it easy to work with. I prefer smaller applicators because I have small eyes. I tend to get a bit stabby with bigger brushes.

What’s your pick for mascara?

Drugstore Faves

Hello! Did you think I’d died? Well, excellent news: I am alive! I moved to a new apartment about a week ago (LOVE it) and that kept me pretty busy for a while there. I also just needed a bit of a breather – you know? I’ve been feeling pretty stressed lately, and without going into a lot of gory detail, it’s taken a bit of a toll on me.

Anyway, I’m back and badder than ever. Today’s post is a little different but I think some of you will appreciate it. I’m going to talk about some drugstore favourites. A few of these are products that I’ve talked about before, but I’m mentioning them again so you can reference them all together mmmmmmmmkay?

1. Revlon Colour Burst Lip Butters

I’m on my second one of these bad boys and I love it as much as the first. I’m not often a repeat customer because I like to try new things, but I’m a devotee of these lip butters for life. The colours are gorgeous, the formula is moisturizing, light, and non-greasy. The price point is also a little bit of alright. They’re usually priced at under $10.

2. Rimmel Stay Matte Pressed Powder

I could wax lyrical about this stuff for days. I first discovered it over on Katelyn’s blog and am I ever glad I decided to give it a whirl. I find most powders too heavy looking for my taste, but as a greasy gal I kind of need it. This stuff is light, and just a dusting gives me a little extra oil free time (we’re not talking hours here but it certainly helps a lot). I’m on my second pan of this stuff as well!

3. Quo Facial Blotting Tissue

I’ve tried a lot of blotting tissues. A LOT. I’ve tried Biore (kind of weird and plasticky), The Body Shop blotting papers (too powdery), and Sephora brand blotting papers (too spendy) and I always come back to the Quo Facial Blotting Tissues. They are quite thin, which I like. I can do my entire face with two sheets. They’re about $6 which is a pretty fair price. There’s not a whole lot to say about these but they’re cheap, effective, and should be part of every oily girl’s arsenal. The Quo brand is exclusive to Shopper’s Drug Mart.

4. Gosh Velvet Touch Lipstick

As I’ve said before, I love me a bold lip. Nothing finishes off an outfit like a bright pop of colour on your kisser. I’ve tried a lot of different reds but my favourite, by far, is from Gosh. It stays put friends. This is a lippy that’s going to last through an evening of debauchery fun. It goes on a little glossy but leaves your lips with a good stain of colour as it wears away. This is a lipstick that does not have to be reapplied. It’s so great that when I lost my first one, I went out the next day and replaced it.

6. Maybelline Great Lash Mascara

I’m a bit of a mascara junkie, never leave home without it. The Maybelline Great Lash Mascara (it’s the pink and green one) is such a classic. I love its tiny brush, which is also great for using on your itty bitty bottom lashes. It’s not clumpy, doesn’t flake, and stays where you put it. For about $6 this mascara is an absolute steal of a deal.

What are some of your drugstore faves?

Smashy, Smashy

Today did not start well. I overslept, I spilled my favourite hair oil all over the bathroom counter, and I dropped my favourite lip gloss down the drain (how disgusting is that?). I was pretty scowly when I (finally) arrived at work. To quote the hilarious Ms. Jennifer Lawrence, I was thinking a word that “starts with f.” (http://bit.ly/13hySjd, turn the volume down if you’re at work.) Anyway, rather than give into the blues and eating my feelings (which is how I normally deal with the crabbies, or the sads, or the happies…) I thought I’d write a blog post because that’s something that always perks me up.

So, without further whingeing, today’s product is Smashbox’s Layer Lash Primer. This little beaut was recommended to me by my best gal pal, and am I ever grateful!

I sweep one layer of this on my lashes, which it turns white, and apply my undereye brightener while it dries. I finish with a swipe of mascara and, voila, lashes out to here! This is one item I will definitely be repurchasing when I run out, though I’ve had my tube since the end of September and it’s still going strong. The $18 price tag is a little daunting but, trust me my pets, it is worth every precious penny!

Do you use a lash primer?

They’re Real!

Remember when I said: “[t]ruth be told, this product is not the miracle it is purported to be. In fairness though, is any product?” I stand corrected. Some products are the miracle they are purported to be, well one is anyway. What’s the miracle product? Benefit’s They’re Real Mascara.

They're Real! 2

I suffer from stumpy eyelash syndrome. It’s a problem, but one that I have come to terms with over the years. False eyelashes aren’t really an option because I’m far to clumsy to apply them properly. I’ve always just focussed more on my lips, and tried to forget my short stumpers. Then I discovered Benefit’s They’re Real Mascara. I grabbed it on a whim while on a bit of a make-up buying binge at Shopper’s Drug Mart with my bestie. It was next to the till, and friends, I think I’ve mentioned that I am highly susceptible to that sort of product placement.

They're Real!

As usual I ripped into my new loot the second I got home. I swiped on a couple of layers of my new mascara over the one I already had on and didn’t really notice much of a difference. It wasn’t until later that evening  when I redid my make-up that I truly understood the miracle I had so blithely stumbled upon. Ladies, stumpy, forlorn lashes are officially a thing of my past! With a couple of coats of this magical elixir my lashes rest on my pillowy cheeks when I flutter them… or pretty close anyway! At $23 a pop this product is on the pricey side, but take it from me, it’s worth every penny!
