Aurum Skincare, is a brand created in my very own home town, Dawson City. For a long time I’d followed them on Instagram and I’d been meaning to purchase a bottle of their Calming Birch Serum for ages. It was delightful when the lovely Joanne reached out and asked if I’d like to try it out. The serum arrived a few days later and I started using it right away. That was three weeks ago and I finally feel ready to talk you through my thoughts on it.
The climate in Yukon is harsh, especially our cold, dry, and long winters. Joanne and Elise, the co-founders of Aurum Skincare, created the brand with sensitive skin in mind. The Birch Calming Serum was developed in collaboration with a biochemist in order to intensify the benefits of birch water when applied to the skin. The key ingredients are birch bio-ferment, which contains amino acids, antioxidants, and minerals, prebiotic oligosaccharides, which have anti-inflammatory properties, and fireweed, which helps with irritation. You can read about their story in detail here.
Aurum Skincare was “born of a deep love for the Yukon; the haunting beauty of its landscape and the dauntless nature of its people. It is here, on the traditional territory of the Tr’ondëk Hwëch’in, that friends and co-founders Elise and Joanne found inspiration amidst the luminous trunks of boreal birch (betula neoalaskana).”
Calming Birch Serum
Aurum’s packaging is gorgeous. The Calming Birch Serum bottle is minimal, soft sage green and beautiful quality. It has a pump, which makes it easy to control the amount of product dispensed. I love attention to small details like this because I hate wasting product. One full pump is enough for my entire face and neck in the morning and again in the evening. The serum itself is light but packs a good punch of moisture. It sinks into the skin lightning fast and does not leave any trace of stickiness or residue. It’s cooling on application and feels lovely and soothing on delicate areas like the under-eye. It’s also great used in combination with other serums or treatments because it’s so light. I use it with my Argireline Solution in the morning, and after lactic acid or retinol at night.
Since I started using the Calming Birch Serum I’ve noticed a definite reduction in redness on my chin and around my nose. I’ve also seen an improvement in the spots of hyper-pigmentation I tend to get after a pimple, of which I have a fair few right now because #maskne. The other noticeable improvement I’ve seen is that the pesky dry spots I get in winter on my chin, forehead, and cheek bones have completely cleared up.
The Calming Birch Serum has been a wonderful addition to my skincare routine, especially in winter, and I’m definitely going to be purchasing another bottle when mine runs out. Mr. P&P has been loving it as well and I can never get him to use any skincare products!
