Yesterday I went shopping with a few school chums. It was a typical girls’ day: lunch followed by hours of pounding the pavement on Robson. We stopped at Zara and all three of us tried on a few things. I found a really cute, orange summer dress and liked it but needed one size bigger — a large. When I asked the somewhat snooty sales girl to grab me a large I was informed that the dress only comes in small or medium, like many other items in the store.

I was flabbergasted! I’m not plus sized by any stretch of the imagination and large is a completely average size! I had a brief glimpse into the world of plus sized women, and I did not enjoy it. I have to wonder who these designers are designing for because it’s certainly not the average North American woman!

Has this ever happened to you?

Shoppers gone wild

I am now happily ensconced in my new city (hello Vancouver), and have been exploring non stop.

Yesterday I attended my first warehouse sale. What an experience! Great clothes at 70% off retail. What’s a shopaholic to do? I waited in line for about half an hour before getting in. I checked my purse, and PURE MADNESS. Girls running from rack to rack grabbing whatever they could carry in their size. I attempted to be practical, and go from rack to rack looking at everything. I quickly got caught up in the frenzy though, and abandoned my sensible plan.
I emerged after about an hour, sweaty, dishevelled, and the owner of a few new great pieces.

Having to wear tights in August is annoying. It just seems so wrong. That said, it’s a great excuse to bust out some fall looks. Fall is my favourite season for clothes. Sweaters, layers, scarves, and cute jackets. It’s such an easy time of year to look completely put together. What’s your favourite fashion season?

I’m a complete fashion junkie. Always have been, always will be. When I walk into a mall I get a rush from all of the stores I’ve yet to visit. It’s like taking that first sip of coffee in the morning or that first bite of a delicious, oozy danish. In short, it’s divine.

The problem? I live in the Yukon, that’s in the far north in Canada for those of you not familiar. Whitehorse, the town I live in, is a two hour flight from Vancouver, a seven hour flight to Ottawa, and, well you get the idea. We’re isolated. The shopping choices here are abysmal. We have a Reitmans and a few locally owned and outrageously expensive shops. What’s a fashionista to do?

I made my first online purchase about six years ago, a tee shirt that I won in an eBay auction. I’ve never looked back. I took my measurements and was off to the races. There is an absolute mecca of online options for the savvy shopper and I’ve discovered some true gems. The truly beautiful thing about online shopping is that you get that great “just bought something new and fabulous” feeling twice! Once when you place the order and then again when you open your package. There’s also the excitement of getting a parcel in the mail. Call me old fashioned, but that’s a thrill I’ll never tire of!
