5 summer makeup tips to help you beat the heat.

You may have heard me mention that fact that I have oily skin the odd time, or three. It’s true. It’s a constant battle to keep my makeup from disappearing and it gets worse in the warm months. Over the years I’ve picked up a few tips and tricks to make my look last longer in the heat and today I’m sharing my top five summer makeup tips for summer 2019!

Avoid foundation

My first summer makeup tip is to avoid using foundation if you can. This means focusing on skincare so that your skin looks great! You don’t need a 10 step routine to have glowing skin. Cleanse, exfoliate, treat, and moisturize well, and you’re on your way!

I use a gentle cleanser with my Foreo Luna fofo in the morning and evening and I follow that with either a liquid exfoliant or a hydrating spray, depending on how my skin is feeling. Then it’s time to treat and for this I use a serum to hydrate, spot treat, etc. Next up is a good moisturizer, and lastly I apply sunscreen.

If you really don’t like to go bare skinned, consider swapping out your foundation for a tinted moisturizer. You’ll still have some coverage but the finish will be lighter and better for summer.

Use a good primer

If you still want to use foundation and/or concealer start off by applying a good primer that will help your base stay intact. I’m currently using one from Stila, but Smashbox do excellent ones and NYX is a great drugstore option. I use a pea sized amount and apply it to my face with my fingers. Just glide the product over your skin, rather than trying to rub it in.

After you’ve applied your face makeup (base, bronzer, blush, etc.) set everything with powder. Dust it over your face, focusing on the t-zone, with a large fluffy brush. I’m currently using Glossier Wowder and I love it. Laura Mercier also make wonderful setting powders. My favourite drugstore setting powder is Rimmel Stay Matte.

After you’ve applied everything except mascara, use a setting spray to really lock your makeup in place. Urban Decay All Nighter is my holy grail but NYX Matte Finish setting spray is an excellent drugstore dupe.

Blotting papers are the unsung heroes of the makeup world, in my opinion. I keep a pack in my purse and use them to touch things up whenever I start to look shiny. My favourites are from Joe Fresh but you can get them at Sephora and from a few different brands at the drugstore. To really refresh everything I like to blot and then re-powder.

So there you have it! Tell me, what are your favourite summer makeup tips for 2019?

  1. Thanks! I need all the help I can get when it comes to makeup! I’ll have to try the tinted moisturizer tip I never knew there was an alternative to foundation x

    1. You should definitely look into it! You can also just conceal areas that need it and leave the rest of your face.

  2. I have a pretty oily face too! A friend who also has an oily face said that’s why she doesn’t use foundation! She said she would glow in the dark! Thanks for the tips!

  3. I have a very oily face too, particularly my t-line! I have mild issues with acne, and I think my face being oily is part of the reason why. I have a friend who also has an oily face, and she says that’s why she doesn’t where foundation! She said she would glow in the dark! Thanks for the tips!

  4. These are such good tips. I always find that as soon as I leave the house my makeup starts slowly melting off my face, so I stick to very minimal makeup in the summer. I think it’s to do with the humidity. I need to get some blotting paper!

    1. Sprays are great – especially if you need a bit of a refresh part way through the day!

  5. Not a skincare tip, necessarily, but in the summer I tend to shy away from wearing eyeshadow. I find it disappears right into my creases after just a few hours in the heat! Oh, and thanks for recommending Wowder; I’d heard great things when it launched, but not much since then.

    1. Yes! This too! I suffer from creasy eye-shadow as well. I find that using a primer does help. I don’t have a specific one that I love but I’ve tried the odd one from Smashbox and they seem to work just fine.

  6. These are such great tips! Priming and setting are essential steps for me xx

  7. I like this a lot, thank you for sharing! I’m a bit of a newbie when it comes to make up (I like eye and lip stuff, but I’m not good, and my eyes tend to get super smudgy by the end of the day), but this list is simple and easy to follow, even for me. And just in time, I think the weather is heating up now…
